Inbox (Conversations) & Announcements
There are two tools your instructor can use to communicate with you: the Inbox and Announcements. Communications via the Inbox remain inside Canvas. That said, you can add additional email addresses (under Account > Settings) and configure your Notifications to push items to them.

Use the Inbox to view, manage, and send direct messages to individuals or groups of people.

Announcements
Depending on the way your instructor has set up the class, you may see a link for Announcements in the Course Menu. The most recent announcements may be pinned to the top of the course home page, they will show under the Recent Activity Dashboard, and may also show in your To Do List. If you are not sure, ask your instructor. You can also configure your Notifications to have them sent to your email account(s).
