Technology Requirements
Is Your Technology Ready?
Review these recommendations before your course begins. Check your syllabus for any additional technology requirements.
For Most Courses
Reliable computer access. We recommend having reliable access to a modern computer with current security updates and virus protection.
A stable internet connection. Reliable, high-speed internet is especially important for live meetings, video uploads, and timed quizzes.
A supported browser. Review the Canvas browser and computer requirements to check that your setup is supported.
- Word processing software. Use software that lets you create and save written assignments. For information about Microsoft Office access through UNM, see Microsoft Office eligibility and download information.
- The correct file format. Follow each assignment's instructions for accepted file types, such as .docx or .pdf. If you use Apple Pages or Google Docs, export or download your work in the required format before submitting it. Open the exported file to check its formatting.
- A way to open course files. Make sure you can open PDFs and Word documents using compatible software, such as a PDF reader and Microsoft Word.
- Regular access to Canvas and email. Check UNM Canvas and your UNM email regularly, following your instructor's expectations.
Depending on Your Course
Some courses require additional equipment or software. Check your syllabus and ask your instructor before purchasing or installing anything.
- Audio and video equipment. You may need speakers or headphones to hear course media, and a webcam and microphone for live meetings, recordings, or proctored exams.
- Video recording tools. If your course requires video submissions, review the Video Submissions page for recording and uploading options, including Kaltura Capture and Express Capture.
- Proctoring software. If your instructor requires Respondus LockDown Browser or Monitor, review the Virtual Proctoring requirements and setup instructions before your exam.
- Other course software. Follow your instructor's directions for any specialized software. See Additional Software for information about software available through UNM.
