Virtual Proctoring of Tests

Your instructor may require virtual proctoring for some tests in UNM Canvas. Check your syllabus and test instructions to find out which tools you will need. Not all courses use virtual proctoring.

Respondus LockDown Browser

Respondus LockDown Browser restricts access to other applications and browser functions during a test. If your instructor requires it, follow the course directions to launch the test using LockDown Browser.

What You Will Need

  • A supported device and operating system. Check the current Respondus system requirements. If you plan to use a Chromebook, review UNM's student setup guide for Chromebook guidance and known issues. Use an iPad only if your instructor has enabled it for the test.
  • Administrator access for Windows or Mac. UNM's setup instructions require administrator access:
    • On Windows, to install, update, and run LockDown Browser.
    • On Mac, to install and update LockDown Browser. It can then run from a standard user account.
  • The UNM version of LockDown Browser. Use UNM's download link or the link provided by your instructor. Before your test, check how to update LockDown Browser.
  • A second device for multi-factor authentication (MFA). UNM's instructions call for a separate device, such as your registered phone, to complete sign-in while your testing computer is locked down. Test this process before exam day. Follow your instructor's rules about putting the device away after signing in.
  • A reliable internet connection. Use a stable connection throughout the test.

Respondus Monitor

Respondus Monitor adds webcam and microphone recording to LockDown Browser. If your instructor requires Monitor, you will also need a working webcam and microphone. The recording and flagged events are available afterward for instructor review.

Follow the test's setup prompts and your instructor's directions for your testing space and any identification you need to provide.

Prepare Before Exam Day

  • Read the test instructions to confirm whether you need LockDown Browser alone or LockDown Browser with Monitor.
  • Install or update the software and check that you can complete the sign-in and MFA process.
  • Complete a practice test if your instructor provides one, using the device and connection you plan to use for the exam.
  • If Monitor is required, test your webcam and microphone and prepare a suitable testing space.
  • Contact your instructor early if you lack the required equipment or testing space, or need to discuss accommodations.
